More than meets the eye. The owners and staff were very friendly. They offer camping, in addition to the motel rooms. The camp sites are geared towards RV's, with water and electricity, but tent camping is also available. It's rustic, but affordable. Definitely treat yourself to some home cooking in the restaurant.
We came to the Big Bend area for a quick 3 day trip and found this motel on Google as we were barreling down I-10. The owner's sister was watching the place while she was away -
Looking forward to coming back!
Amanda was very sweet and so accommodating! Wilson, the official motel greeting dog, was there to show us around. CLEAN rooms are freshly remodeled with new tile floors and fresh paint. COLD A.C. small fridge and microwave round out the amenities. The motel is nestled in a basin area and you feel like you are at the end of the world, save for a few cars heading to Terlingua, which is only about a 10 min drive. They have a lovely rocked pool in the middle of the complex and we sat out at night and watched the free-tail bats swoop down for an occasional drink, sometimes right in front of our face! Cottontails and quail roamed everywhere. Perfect setting to watch the sun and moonrise and great stargazing!
Great place that's not in Big Bend, but not too far away. We ate breakfast there and loved it! I'll be back to this place when I go back to Big Bend.
After reading the prior reviews, I was a bit anxious upon arrival. There may be a minor language barrier to explain what some have experienced, but I find you often get what you give. My family found the owners to be quite gracious. As we entered our room, they quickly ran over and noted our heater wasn't working (cold spell just hit) and immediately offered another room or a space heater...we loved the room so went with the space heater. Room was clean, bathroom/shower were great, and we simply loved the whole ambiance of the place and it's setting around the pool and grounds. It's not 'in' Terlingua, so you have a little drive, but we'd stay again. Dining isn't offered each night, and what's on the menu is whatever they made that day. Think mama's cookin'! In town they noted the owner makes great Tamales...thankfully that was on the 'buffet' menu. The man that entered for dinner before us noted he could not afford the meal that day, but could pay $6 today and the balance before leaving. She offered him to take a seat. After dinner he paid his partial payment and she would have none of him paying the rest and to go about his business. Had you just walked in you might have thought she kicked him out, but what we saw said a lot about the kind of people the owners are. You're in God's country, and this family is devoted. All in all, a wonderful experience and place to stay.
Again, if you are used to 5 star hotels this is probably not a place for you. But, if you are looking for clean and comfortable with a welcoming feel, then you can find it here. Note - The restaurant was not open due to the owners being away and slow season so plan ahead if you are looking for food (we ate at the Starlight Theater in Terlingua and was surpisingly good considering it could be a big tourist trap;)
No wifi, no beers and a very rude owner. Way overpriced !
